Fasteners made from ASTM A193 B8 Class 5 are made from AISI 304 stainless steel. However, this class has been developed to provide additional work hardening, which has resulted in greater toughness than previous classes. The chemical makeup of a typical ASTM A193 B8 Class 5 fastener consists of approximately 18-20% chromium, 8-10.5% nickel and 0.5% carbon, making them highly resistant to corrosion, oxidation and exposure to chemicals. The tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, and fatigue life of Class 5 fasteners are greater than all classes prior to Class 5. All these characteristics will ensure that, when using this class in applications such as high temperature, pressure and corrosive environments, the fastening systems will have long-term integrity in demanding and critical applications in various industries.
